At Woodinville Gentle Dental, our patient’s oral health is very important to us. When we evaluate your teeth, we determine if you have any periodontal conditions that may require periodontal cleaning. Periodontal maintenance cleaning is an advanced dental cleaning procedure performed to specifically target plaque, tartar buildup and bacteria that forms along the surfaces of the teeth to ensure healthy gums and periodontal health.
Periodontal disease & gingivitis can occur when the bacteria from plaque forms on the gingival tissue, above or below the gum line. This bacteria can cause inflammation and irritation that can destroy your gum and bone tissue, and can cause infection that compromises the health and stability of your teeth. Even with the best brushing and flossing homecare techniques, it can be impossible to remove debris, bacteria and deposits from the gum pockets that form when you have a periodontal condition.
Using specialized dental equipment, our hygienist removes the tartar (calculus) and plaque buildup that causes periodontal problems.
Periodontal cleanings can involve the following:
- Supragingival cleaning– The hygienist thoroughly cleans the area above the gum line with scaling instruments to rid them of plaque and calculus.
- Subgingival cleaning– Removal of the calculus and bacteria from the gum pockets and beneath the gum line.
- Root planning– This involves smoothing of the tooth root by the hygienist to eliminate any remaining bacteria. Eliminating this harmful bacteria is very important.
Periodontal maintenance cleanings are performed by our hygienists typically on a more frequent schedule and may require additional treatments with a Periodontist Specialist. Dr. Ryan and our experienced hygienists will determine the appropriate treatment to improve your oral health.
