Wearing a mouth guard is an effective dental device that is worn to prevent damage to your teeth. The following is two of the types of mouth guards we recommend.
A night guard is designed to protect your teeth from unnecessary wear and fractures caused by clenching and grinding that happens primarily in your sleep. However, some people unknowingly clench and grind throughout the day. A night guard also helps reduce the effects of TMJ (temporomandibular joint disorders) soreness that can occur in your jaw.
Our night guards are made of a hard acrylic that is designed to fit over your upper teeth precisely. They can be adjusted as needed and is made to last a long time.
A sports guard is a more flexible device that is custom fitted to your teeth. This device is worn over teeth during athletic and recreational activities to protect them from damage. Sports guards can buffer damage to the teeth or fixed dental appliances from blows and physical contact that may occur during your activity. They can also act as a barrier between teeth/braces and the cheeks, between the lips and tongue to limit the risk of soft tissue damage.
Your night guard and/or sports guard is a custom fitted device that is made in two short appointments by doing the following:
- At the first appointment we take upper and lower impressions of your teeth and send the impression to a lab to fabricate your mouth guard.
- At the second appointment we deliver and adjust the mouth guard to fit your mouth precisely. We also go over instructions on how to care for your new device.
We are happy to answer any questions you may have regarding mouth guards.
